In the past decade R. H. Tregoweth has installed a full range of modern facilities, keeping the production site up to date on the latest timber processing technology to improve efficiency and customer service. The products include sawn timber, finger joint blocks, cut to length components, kiln drying, machining and chips.

In this challenge for modernization, a brand new Multi-Sensor Quality Scanner Goldeneye 300 has been installed in April 2015 at the Te Kuiti site of Tregoweth Ltd. The scanner application provides automatic quality grading of the lamellas by scanning all 4 sides in longitudinal feeding, in a single cross cut line from Dimter. The application is a full profile scanning and grading of raw lamellas for components and finger jointing, which are produced using sawn timber from pruned radiata logs. The in feed and out feed unit of the scanner is provided by System TM. The boards are dry and planed and ideally possess clear wood sections. Kevin Tregoweth, managing director, states with satisfaction: ”We are impressed with the grade recovery increase provided by the Goldeneye scanner and re-ripping application”.

Goldeneye Scanner for full profile scanning

The Goldeneye scanner features all state-of-the art 3D board information from the different scanner signals and the equalized color map from the camera RGB signals. The detection of board properties and wood defects is implemented through computer vision algorithms. The real time visualization of the detected board properties and wood defects is managed by high-speed data transfer to the optimization process.

The Goldeneye 300 optimization system provides outstanding functionality such as the acquisition of radiata pine board properties and wood defects, like knots, bark, cracks, resin pockets, wane, damaged edges, glue and brown stain etc., including their relative positions on the board. The optimization maximizes the value of the obtainable product by considering all possible combinations from the active product list.
